Each Hero has 3 levels in all. When you register, the 5 first Heroes you get are level 1.

When you obtain a hero that you already have and who is level 1 or 2, your Hero wins XP. There are different configurations:

You have a Level-1 Hero and you obtain the same Level-1 Hero: your Hero gains 1 XP.

You have a Level-1 Hero and you obtain the same Hero but Level-2: your Hero upgrades to Level 2.

You have a Level-2 Hero and you obtain the same Hero but Level-1: : your Hero gains 1 XP. .

You have a Level-2 Hero and you obtain the same Level-2 Hero: your Hero gain 1 XP.

You have a Level-2 Hero and you obtain the same Hero but Level-3: your Hero upgrades to Level 3.

When your Hero has enough XP, he upgrades to the next level.
